If it was never signed out, it does not run.

A tool crib works because the window is the only way through. Ask for the thing, sign for the thing, and everything else stays on the far side of a counter. One line here applies that same discipline to software.

Refusal by default, in plain words

Most endpoint products ask one question: have I met this before? Allowlisting asks a better one: was this signed for? Approved programs, libraries and scripts launch. The rest gets turned away, be it novel malware, a script somebody downloaded to solve a problem at four on a Friday, or a perfectly respectable tool nobody thought to mention.

That refusal is the entire product. It leans on nothing having been seen before, which is why it holds against software written last week for the express purpose of walking past scanners.

Living with a counter

The opening weeks generate traffic. Learning observes what your machines truly run and composes a list from that, then enforcement comes on and the exceptions start arriving. What the counter will not do

One line, and a strong one. It is narrow by design, so here is how far the reach extends.

  • The settling period is genuine work, and part of it lands on you. We field the request traffic. Somebody at your end still has to say whether an unfamiliar program belongs in how you work, since that is knowledge we simply do not hold.
  • Allowlisting governs launching, not conduct. A signed for application misused by somebody holding valid credentials produces no refusal at all. Catching that belongs to the gauge set, not to this counter.
  • Reach ends where the endpoint ends. Software running inside a hosted platform you subscribe to never touches your machines, so this line has no view of it whatsoever.
  • Hardware nobody enrolled is precisely that. A laptop we were never told about answers to no policy, and whoever carries it will notice nothing unusual at all.
  • We will not quietly soften policy for a quiet life. Where a request would draw the teeth of the control, you will be told the price of it before anybody signs. You are still free to sign.
