Board 07 / Stamped stock

Stock gets stamped before it goes anywhere.

In a workshop you mark material so nobody has to guess later what it is or where it came from. Two lines do that for files: locate the sensitive ones, then settle where they may travel.

Locating it first

Almost every firm turns out to be wrong about where its sensitive material sits. Card numbers end up in a spreadsheet attached to an old thread, identity documents get saved to a desktop for one afternoon and stay four years, and an export somebody needed once becomes a permanent resident of a laptop that travels.

Discovery sweeps the machines and reports what is genuinely there, device by device, with a figure attached to the exposure. That figure is the thing that makes the next conversation short.

Then settling where it may travel

Enforcement takes the map and acts on it. Files holding protected material get scrambled and unscrambled as people work, profiles let different classes of material be treated differently, and the applications and routes permitted to carry it are named rather than left to chance.

None of this asks your staff to hold a policy in their heads. The control rides on the file, so a rule travels alongside the material instead of depending on somebody recalling it at a bad moment.

Nearly everybody is wrong about where their sensitive files actually live.

Sensitive Data Discovery

Actifile discovery and exposure reporting

A sweep of what genuinely sits on your machines: personal detail, card data and the rest, found where it lives rather than where a policy document insists it ought to live. Out of it comes a device by device breakdown and a starting figure to hold up against next quarter.

  • Personal and payment material located on Linux, macOS and Windows alike.
  • A starting figure with device by device detail, so cleanup can be aimed.
  • Weakness scanning and trend reporting layered over the discovery sweep.

Encryption and Channel Control

Actifile with enforcement turned on

Everything discovery does, and then a consequence follows. Files holding protected material are scrambled and unscrambled as people use them, profiles decide what counts as protected in your trade, and the applications and routes permitted to carry it get named instead of assumed.

  • Files scrambled and unscrambled in use, without rearranging anybody's day.
  • A choice of profiles, so different classes of material get different treatment.
  • Named applications and named routes for anything carrying protected material.

What a stamp cannot do

Data protection gets oversold harder than anything except mail. These two lines do a specific job, and here is where it ends.

  • Discovery locates files, not obligations. Knowing where card data sits is genuinely useful. That is not a legal assessment, and we are the wrong people to tell you what a given regulator will accept.
  • Nothing here reads a photograph of a document. Material in unusual formats, buried inside images, or living on systems the agent does not run on will not be turned up by a sweep of your endpoints.
  • Enforcement will irritate somebody in the opening week. Route control means a path that used to work quietly stops working. That is the control doing its job, and it goes better where you have already decided who signs exceptions.
  • Scrambling protects a file, not an account. Somebody holding valid access and a legitimate reason to open the material can still do the wrong thing with it afterward. Different control, and partly a different problem.
  • A scrambled copy is not a spare copy. Nothing on this board is a backup. Getting material back once it has gone belongs in the spares cabinet.
